Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils from plants for healing. The rule for using any kind of aromatherapy on anybody's skin is always dilute the oils with a carrier oil, because the essential oils are highly concentrated. If you are using an essential oil without diluting the oil, you are going to burn someone's skin,& can cause an allergic skin reaction, that's why I never recommend using essential oils on anybody especially small children's skin without diluting. I think if you are going to use Aromatherapy around small children use it with a diffuser. I would never recommend putting any essential oils by mouth without specific instructions.
What are Essential oils
Essential oils are concentrated extracts taken from, roots, leaves, flowers, seeds, blossoms, & herbs of the plants. Some oils are used to promote physical healing to treat swelling or fungal infections. Others are used for their emotional value--they may enhance relaxation or make the room smell pleasant. Others are used for calming the nervous system.
The History of Aromatherapy
Essential oils have been used for therapeutic purposes for nearly 6,000 years. The ancient Chinese, Indians, Egyptians, Greeks & Romans used them in cosmetics, perfumes, & drugs. Essential oils were commonly used for spiritual, therapeutic, hygienic & ritualistic purposes.
Rene'-Maurice Gattefosse', was a French chemist who discovered the healing properties of essential oils. He analyzed the chemical properties of essential oils & how they were used to treat burns, skin infections, gangrene, & wounds in soldiers during World War 1. Aromatherapy did not become popular in the United States until the 1980s. The smell receptors in your nose communicate with parts of your brain that serve as storehouses for emotions & memories of smells. I believe that aromatherapy does stimulate your brain & influence physical, emotional, & mental health. Some researchers think that molecules from essential oils may interact in the blood of hormones & enzymes.
